Managing a Playtest with FirstLook and Live Aware
Updated over a week ago

FirstLook is a playtesting and community management platform that lets you create a branded experience for onboarding playtesters, distributing keys, collecting NDA signatures, and managing Discord Roles. It's a great tool for tying together all the touchpoints that go into communicating with playtesters in your community, so it's a natural fit to work with Live Aware to also capture playtest video.

Using FirstLook and Live Aware together is a great way to make a simple, unified experience for playtesters to stream right into your Live Aware workspace, so you can get actionable feedback in your Insights Dashboard.

💡Live Aware functionality must be enabled in your FirstLook workspace. You may need to reach out to your FirstLook representative to have it enabled in your workspace.

Creating your Playtest on Live Aware

Before you can export playtester information to FirstLook, you will need to create and configure a playtest in Live Aware.

Create and Complete Playtest Setup

  1. From your dashboard, Click the New Event card

  2. Name and describe your event and click Create

  3. After your Event is created, Click Playtesters in the upper Event bar.

  4. Select Windows as the Platform for your playtest. Currently Windows is the only supported platform for distributing stream links with FirstLook. Please let us know if you would like support for other platforms.

  5. Set the Stream Title and Stream Identifier to determine each Stream Name.

  6. Set the Playtest's Start Date, Start Time, End Date, End Time, and Timezone. Playtesters will not be able to stream before the Start Date and Time or after the End Date and Time.

  7. Set Instructions with your Pre-Playtest Message and Post-Playtest Message. These will be displayed to the playtester in the Live Aware Recorder.

  8. Click Save.

Enable Shareable Link or Add Playtesters for Direct Invites

Once you have completed the Playtest Setup, you can now invite playtesters with either a Shareable Link or a Direct Invite.

A Shareable Link is a URL you can send through FirstLook, but is not unique to each playtester. This can be a simpler method of managing playtesters to stream into Live Aware, but anyone with this link will be allowed to stream to your workspace. Be sure to select Anyone with the Link as the access method, and copy the generated link. This will be used later in your FirstLook setup.

Direct Invites offer more control, giving you a unique link for each playtester. You can create playtesters individually in Live Aware, which will generate playtester specific access links, which can then be imported into FirstLook.

For more detail on these playtesting concepts, be sure to consult Creating and Managing Playtests.

Adding Live Aware Instructions to your FirstLook Flow

Now that you've set up your Live Aware playtest, it's time to update your playtester Flow in FirstLook to include Live Aware instructions.

  1. Select Flows, and the Role you would like to use for Live Aware Playtesters.

  2. On the Complete step, enable Stream on Live Aware as a CTA.

  3. If you are using a Shareable Link, enable the option to display a reusable invite link, and paste in the link generated in the previous step.

Migrating Playtester Data into FirstLook (Direct Invites)

If you are using direct invites, you will need to import playtester access links into FirstLook. This is simply a matter of exporting a CSV from Live Aware, and importing a CSV into FirstLook. This step is only necessary if you are not using a Shareable Link.

💡 You can offer Live Aware to a subset of your playtesters that are more active in your community. Create a FirstLook Role dedicated to Live Aware Playtesters to easily segment Live Aware instructions to a smaller group.

  1. While in your Live Aware Playtest Setup page, select Direct Invites

  2. Hover over the three-dot ellipses and select Export CSV. Your Live Aware playtester data will be downloaded as a CSV file.

  3. In FirstLook, select Players from the left side navigation bar.

  4. Click Import in the top-right corner of the Players screen.

  5. Click Choose File, and select the downloaded CSV file.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Assign the Playtester email and Playtest access fields to Email and Live Aware Playtest Access Link fields as shown.

  8. Click Preview.

  9. If everything looks correct in the summary view click Invite Players. You may optionally invite them with an email at this time as well.

❗ Be aware that when using Direct Invites, these links will change from Live Aware event to event, so if you are using the same playtesters, you will need to export and reimport to update the Playtest Access Links for each playtester.

After your playtesters complete Onboarding, they will now see a link to Stream on Live Aware on their welcome page and in their welcome email.
